The country shouldn't be punished for the fact that part of it has been under Turkish occupation nor should its EU membership have been used as a playing card in the reunification process.zarazekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00750261156890244634noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27932062.post-3261471799502011732009-12-27T15:59:28.025+00:002009-12-27T15:59:28.025+00:00It wasn't wrong to let Cyprus join the EU in 2...It wasn't wrong to let Cyprus join the EU in 2004. The country was ready to join whereas Turkey was decades away from satisfying the Union's accession requirements. As a Cypriot who benefits from the EU's freedoms (I work in London), I don't see why I should have had to wait a day longer to enjoy those freedoms. It seems that the author thinks that the negotiating power in the context of the Cyprus problem needed to be adjusted in Turkey's favour and that the prospect of EU accession should have been used to blackmail the Greek-Cypriot people. Both propositions are outrageous.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
